Women’s History Month is a time to recognize the experiences, mentorship, and leadership that shape both our industry and the people within it. At EIMC, we value the individuals on our team who bring dedication, curiosity, and a commitment to growth into their work every day.
This week, we’re pleased to highlight Laura Peterson, Marine Surveyor based in Florida. Laura reflects on the mentors who influenced her early on, from a coach who built her confidence to a teacher who showed her the impact of patience and support. Those experiences continue to shape the way she approaches her work and the people around her today.
Taking time to share these stories is an important part of Women’s History Month, and we’re proud to spotlight Laura and the perspective she brings to our organization.
Q: Who is a woman that has inspired you, personally or professionally?
A: A woman that has inspired me is my high school soccer coach. I think back to my high school years, which were pivotal in my adolescence. I walked onto a soccer field, not knowing anyone and having never played the sport. Over the next four years, our coach taught me more than just skills on the field, she instilled confidence, poise, and the value of dedication. Each year I pushed myself to improve my abilities as a player, and that mindset has stayed with me ever since.
Today, I continue to apply those lessons by striving to grow my capabilities and pursue new opportunities in my professional career.
Q: Who is a woman who has had a meaningful influence on your life, and how has she shaped who you are today?
A: High school was intimidating for me, with a new school and new friends, and I often found myself struggling academically. One morning before class, I approached my English teacher because I hadn’t completed the homework and was honestly borderline petrified about the trouble I might get into. When I spoke with her, she welcomed me into her office with a smile and took the time to help me understand the assignment. Instead of reprimanding me, she showed patience and gave me the guidance I needed to gain a better understanding and perspective on the work that needed to be done.
That moment stayed with me. Her kindness and willingness to help reminded me that sometimes a little patience and encouragement can make a big difference in someone’s confidence and growth. It’s something I’ve carried with me ever since, and it’s a reminder of the impact strong, supportive women can have on others.
Q: What is one of your favorite inspirational quotes?
A: “She believed she could, so she did.” — R.S. Grey
Q: What advice would you give to women who are just starting out in their careers or considering this industry?
A: Remain steadfast, be curious, ask questions, seek mentorship. The marine industry offers a wide range of opportunities and women bring valuable perspectives and contributions to help strengthen the field.
Q: What strength do you think women bring to this industry that deserves more recognition?
A: Women are naturally intuitive and inquisitive, and those instincts are highly beneficial when investigating marine losses. Trust your instincts, stay curious, and continue building your knowledge. Those qualities can take you far in the marine industry.
